Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos
Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos (Šid, April 14, 1921 – Zagreb, December 18, 1987) studied art history in Vienna, graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb in 1949, and received his doctorate in 1957. He was the curator and head of the Gallery of Primitive Art and a long-time curator in the Galleries of the City of Zagreb, as well as the head of the Center for Film, Photography and Television. He wrote critiques, theoretical texts and published several monographs. He began to work in the fifties; he was a member of the avant-garde group Gorgona and a participant in the New Tendency movement. In the series Tabula rasa, Nostories, Paysages, Manifesti and others, he has created a series of works of neo-avant-garde type which, after exhibitions in important world galleries (Berlin, New York, Paris, Barcelona, Graz, Kassel and elsewhere), gained him a high international reputation.
